Is Taipei safe for solo female travelers?

Taipei is generally considered to be one of the safest cities for solo female travelers. There is high regard for law, order and personal safety in Taiwan, especially in its capital Taipei. Street crimes like mugging and theft are relatively rare and strict laws against such offenses are enforceable and adhered to. Locals are typically friendly and helpful, including in providing directions, and there are tourist centers and police readily available. As with any location, it’s recommended nonetheless to stay alert and use common sense.

How safe is Taipei?

Safety at night:Safe

Taipei is generally known to be a safe city for solo female travelers, even at night. The city is well-lit with an efficient public transport system running until midnight. The crime rate is relatively low and residents are typically respectful. However, always be sure to follow common safety practices such as avoiding poorly-lit or deserted areas, especially late at night.

Public transportation:Very safe

Public transportation in Taipei is regarded as safe and reliable. This includes the Metro, buses and even taxis. The Taipei Metro is efficient, punctually maintained, and has English alongside the Mandarin signs which make it more convenient for international travelers. Surveillance cameras are also prevalent and there is an active presence of MRT staff and security to ensure passenger safety. Taxis are also frequent, licensed and metered ensuring a secure and transparent transaction. The lack of language might initially be a problem but usually, drivers are honest and public transport overall is considered safe even late at night.

Street harassment:Low

Taipei is generally a safe city for female solo travelers. Street harassment is minimal, with verbal or physical harassment being a rarity. The Taiwanese culture promotes politeness and respect, making it uncomfortable for most locals to engage in such activities. Safety is well prioritized, especially for women, in the populated areas, and at night, ensuring a comfortable and worry-free experience for solo female travelers.

Petty crimes:Low

Petty crimes in Taipei such as pickpocketing or bag snatching are generally rare, due in part to the outstanding policing systems in the city and strong societal regard for law and order. However, like in any populous city, it's always advisable to take standard precautions such as not leaving belongings unattended and staying aware of your surroundings especially in crowded places.

Tap water:Very safe

The tap water in Taipei is very safe to drink. The city's water department has stringent quality controls to ensure that the water meets World Health Organization standards. However, some people might choose to boil it first or use bottled water due to varying local practice and preferences.

Solo travel experience

It is safe and lively, it has well organized and highly developed public transportations and infrastructure. People are friendly, so many fun activities can do. Food are tasty, weather is nice during the spring.

Group travel experience

I was in Taipei for 3 days. The weather was a bit gloomy during Chinese New Year. We move around with MRT, bus and local train. The service is top notch. On time, cheap and clean. Food is average for me. It's People are polite and helpful if you try to communicate effectively. Taipei is the most safest city especially for solo female traveller. You can walk the street without so much worries. Accept the scooters. They are a bit reckless. I went with a group but will do it solo next time.

Solo travel experience

Very safe city, clean, easy to get around, people are very friendly. Amazing food (nightmarkets!), Elephant mountain for great views of Taipei 101, Yangmingshan sunset and night views. Beitou hot springs, Tamsui, and daytrip to Jiufen and Pingxi are worthwhile

Taipei is a safe city and I always like to walk around in the evening in summertime as the temperature is much cooler😌 you can also rent a bike it’s so pleasant to explore or commute the city by cycling!

safest place to live! best city I’ve ever been to. I never ever need to worried about anything when I walk alone on the street even in the dark. I don’t need to worried about forgetting something because someone will send it to the police office. 台北超棒！我愛台北～最安全的城市沒有之一，晚上一個女生走路也不用擔心，東西放著也不會被偷，人都很好

Taipei is an amazing city which have convenient transportation and facilities. The people are friendly , helpful and welcoming. With beautiful city landscape, mountains for the tourists to discover. Happy to be local tour guide!
