Is Taiwan Safe for Solo Female Travelers?

Taiwan is generally considered very safe for solo female travelers. The crime rate is pretty low, particularly against tourists. Public transportation is reliable and convenient, including late at night, and it's not uncommon for women to also be out alone. The locals are typically helpful and respectful, so you can expect to feel comfortable while traveling around. However, like any global cities, it is always important to take basic precautions, such as not wandering into less populated areas late at night.

Safety index

Safety at night:Safe

Taiwan is generally considered safe for solo female travelers even at night. Cities are well-lit, with busy streets full of locals and tourists. Public transportation is reliable, and crime rates are low. However, like anywhere else in the world, exercising standard precautions such as not venturing into less crowded or dimly lit areas at night is recommended.

Public transportation:Very safe

Taiwan's public transportation is known for its excellent safety and efficiency. From High-Speed Rail to the MRT (Mass Rapid Transit), buses, and taxis, all modes of public transport are reliable and widely used by locals and tourists alike. The stations and vehicles are clean and well-maintained, plus, most have security features like cameras and regular police presence. The signage and announcements in English also make it easy to navigate. Women traveling alone, even late at night, generally feel safe when using public transportation in Taiwan.

Street harassment:Very low

Taiwan is generally a safe country for solo female travelers. The locals are known for their politeness and respect towards others. Street harassment or catcalling is a rare occurrence, and it's highly unlikely that you will face any during your trip. Still, it’s always important to stay alert and cautious, as with any place you travel to.

Petty crimes:Low

Taiwan is a relatively safe country with low crime rates. Petty crimes such as theft or pickpocketing do occur, albeit infrequently, often in crowded places like markets or public transportation. However, local law enforcement is vigilant, and measures are often in place to deter such activities, therefore, the risk of encountering such situations remains low.

Tap water:Safe

Tap water in Taiwan is usually treated and is technically safe to drink. However, an older pipeline system in some areas may affect water quality. Therefore, it's generally advised to boil tap water before drinking, especially in rural areas. Most locals drink boiled or bottled water. Many hotels provide complimentary bottled water, as do most restaurants. There are also plenty of convenient stores where you can buy fresh bottled water very easily.

Taipei was incredibly safe, the people are very friendly and willing to help! There were a variety of activities, including hiking, local street markets and specialty coffee places. It was relatively affordable (especially the food) and I recommend staying at a hostel called Star Hostel Taipei East, which was clean and comfortable.

Solo travel experience

One of the safest countries with some of the kindest people in the world. It feels safe to walk on the streets because someone will immediately approach and ask how they can help. Lovely people, interested in the world, and conversation, and ready to help however they can. It makes you want to go back there.

Solo travel experience

I studied abroad in Taiwan and fell in love with the place. I can easily say that it is my favorite place in the world. The culinary culture is amazing (night markets are a must), it is very safe there, everyone is so friendly, and the diversity of landscapes (city, rainforests, beaches, mountains, etc.) is impressive. Taipei is an incredible city - it's very easy to get lost in its alleys.

Amazing places to visit, with temples everywhere and not that famous for most of the people. It feels special to be there and not being surrounded by tourists! I'll recommande it 100%, the safety there is non-comparable to any other country (as a solo girl traveler I know what I'm talking about :))

Is Taiwan safe for women to live?

Overall it is very safe for female, but avoid dark and narrow streets at late night, especially in the countryside. Be aware of people around you when you are walking alone at night, better to have an accompany with you.

Family travel experience

Spend 8 days in Taiwan with family. We enjoyed it overall. Took a road-trip to Taroko and Sun Moon Lake and there are lots more to see. Taipei is vibrant with lots of sights and things to do too as a family with elderlies and small kids.
